At the end of the 1980s, RENFE had a small fleet of air-conditioned sleeper coaches (series 10600 and 9600), in addition to the already outdated non-air-conditioned 8100 type, making a total of 200 coaches for this type of service. However, the demand for sleeper seats for night trains continued to increase with each summer season.
continued to increase with each summer season. This made it necessary to increase the number of sleeper cars.
At that time, the network could not afford to purchase newly built vehicles, so it was decided to completely refurbish a large part of the fleet of 8000 seating and department cars.
These carriages, with more than 20 years of service behind them, were beginning to become surplus to requirements. On the one hand, because the fast daytime trains were already running with cars suitable for higher speeds and with lounge type distribution. On the other hand, because on night trains, passengers increasingly preferred to travel in beds or bunk beds. This made these types of vehicles ideal for conversion and conversion.

These refurbishments, which were carried out from 1987 to the end of 1989 and which included several new series of coaches, consisted of the complete replacement of interiors, access gangways, electrical and pneumatic equipment, air conditioning, water equipment, toilets, etc. This increase in the number of air-conditioned seats for night services allowed several trains to be upgraded to Star trains, indicating their superior performance compared to conventional express trains.

The first series derived from these conversions were the BBL-11600 (later BC11x-11600) type bunk cars. There were 150 cars of 12 compartments, derived from the high series BB-8500s, with a total of 66 sleeping places, being the vehicles of this type with the largest capacity in Europe. In addition to this, a further 40 cars from the low BB-8500 series were converted to form the new WL26x-7100 series of Grand Class sleeping cars, equipped with 26 seats and individual showers. Electrotren has reproduced, under the reference HE4006, a basic Star train composition based on this type of car. For this we have taken into account all the modifications of each one, such as the access platforms, the intercommunication doors, the different equipment on the underbody, the details of the roof, as well as interior details such as the bunks, the beds, the showers or the bunk staff department. Decorated in the "Star" livery itself, we have considered the differences between them, such as the orange doors or the "Car-Bed" lettering for the WL26x-7100 car, and the differences in logo, lettering and roof colour for the BC11x-11600 cars.
